If you’re considering buying tarot cards for teenagers then you have come to the right place. As I explained in my previous post, tarot makes a great gift for teenagers, but with the vast array of decks available, which ones do you go for? After all, you don’t want something too dark or macabre or full of nudity, especially if you are buying a deck for a younger teenager. Luckily, there are lots of cards that are suitable for teenagers and some have even been created with the teenager in mind. Here I will take you through some broad categories just to give you an idea of what is available. Please note that this list is the tip of the iceberg of what is available and is more to give you an idea of what is out there for the younger tarot enthusiasts, so please feel free to do some further investigation. Clicking on the images of the featured decks will take you to Amazon, where you can read more in depth reviews by other users.
Tarot For The Fantasy Teens
Whether your teenager is into The Legend of King Arthur or magical mystical lands of fairies and mythical creatures, there are plenty of tarot decks that will suit him or her. These may also be nice for the younger teens. If there are parents worried about some of the images in certain decks of cards, especially when it comes to bloody scenes or nudity, then this is one genre of tarot cards that you don’t have problems like that. For example, the Mystic Dreamer Tarot (shown below with the image of the accompanying book The Dreamers Journal) is based on the popular Rider Waite deck, but without any of the figures in the nude. The Oracle of Shadow and Light is actually not tarot, but a deck of oracle cards. It can, however, be used very much like tarot cards and it has been specifically created for teenagers. These cards are beautifully illustrated and as the manufacturer states each card has “its own guiding message, from developing your inner strength, intuition, or simply finding happiness with oneself.” My youngest sister was 19 years old when I bought her, her very first set of tarot cards and it was a fantasy deck, very much about Fairy Tales which she loved. I wish the Oracle of Shadow and Light had been available then, as it would have been perfect for her. Don’t just take my word for it, check out the video below to view the cards in this deck.
Tarot For The ‘Twilight’ And ‘Vampire Diaries’ Teenager
Vampires have been an enduring classic for decades and most recently, a whole new generation of teenagers have been enthralled by the romance and adventures of vampires due to the popularity of the books and films of The Twilight Saga and the books and television series of The Vampire Diairies, to name just two. If your teenager is nuts about all things vampire, then maybe one of these Tarot decks is the one to choose. I can relate to the teenagers that would want one of these decks as I have been a fan of all things vampire since I was a child (blame an inquisitive nature, my mother’s love of Hammer Horrors and Christopher Lee) and if there was any deck I would have chosen when I was a young teen it would have been one of these, just for the sheer beauty of the images. What is it that makes vampires so appealing especially to teenagers? Well, Vampires live on the fringes of society; they’re a part of it, but not really and are generally considered to be misunderstood. There are lots of levels that teenagers can relate to and none of that has anything to do with drinking blood. In fact, the thirst is often seen as the unavoidable curse they must bear, rather than an appealing aspect of vampire life.
Tarot For The Goth And Emo Teenager
If your teenager would be more interested in the beauty of Gothic cards, then apart from the vampire tarot decks above, you can also find a deck that is quite specifically Gothic in nature. These cards may appear to be quite dark as they have images in dark colours, but they are absolutely beautiful and for all their darkness have a very romantic beauty that is very appealing, especially in a deck like The Bohemian Gothic Tarot. Remember, to be able to make the most of a tarot reading, it is extremely important to connect with the images on the cards. Many people make the mistake of thinking that darker, Goth images will also translate into darker readings, but that is absolutely not the case. Tarot cards are just a tool, the way a black, red or blue pen wouldn’t change the tone of what was written, in the same way the images of a tarot deck would not affect the content of a reading; they just appeal more to the reader, therefore enhancing messages conveyed.
Other Tarot Cards For Teenagers
Apart from vampires, I think horror is extremely popular among teenagers, both as the topic of movies and video games. There has been a recent boom in all things zombie-related, and horror themed movies and books are being produced for the young adults as much as the older ones. Here are two decks that I think are perfect for teenagers who happen to be horror enthusiasts. The Zombie Tarot is so wonderfully different. The images are all like a scene out of some disaster movie, but they are authentic Tarot cards because the deck is inspired by the original Rider Waite images.
If your teenager likes something a little more traditional but still slightly spooky, then I would suggest Ghost and Spirits Tarot. This deck is based on the supernatural traditions related to ghosts from all around the world. This is not suitable for younger or sensitive teenagers as some of the images may be a little unsettling.
The Universal Transparent Tarot Deck is a unique tarot deck with cards that are unlike what one would generally find in a traditional deck. All of the cards are transparent – yep you read that right, transparent! The deck consists of transparent cards with images that can be layered with other cards to create meanings and images. As a Tarot reader this really amazes me, because I have always known and taught that the meanings of all the cards in a reading work together to give a whole meaning, but this deck takes that one step further by the cards literally working together to compose one whole meaning. The perfect Tarot deck for the innovative teen.
If You Still Don’t Know Which Tarot Deck to Get for Your Teenager…
…you could let your teenager choose. It may be an idea to select a couple or more tarot decks that you would be willing to give your teenager and then asking him or her to choose which one is their favourite. You can also get a better feel for a deck by reading what others have to say about using it. Luckily, tarot enthusiasts are all too happy to rave or rant about the decks that they use and you can read very detailed reviews on Amazon, about what people liked or did not like.
