Hermit Tarot Card Meanings
This card presents a rather stark image and at first glance, it would seem to be quite sad. This is the Hermit, and by his name we understand he is reclusive and alone. He is an old man, but he does not appear to be decrepit or fragile, in fact his beard would suggest his wisdom. He is the Hermit and is away from society, this is visible by the fact that there is nothing around him; no trees or bushes or buildings or mountains. But he is not hiding out in some cave; the staff in his left hand appears to be an aid to walking when he travels and the lantern he holds before him tell me that he is out searching for something. I don’t know why, but I feel confident he will find it. He is relying on no-one but himself; he has left behind everyone and everything and withdrawn to go and search out enlightenment.
So the story this card tells is that it is not a time to rely on others, but only on oneself. No matter how much wisdom the Hermit has, there is some enlightenment that he seeks, and it is so important that he has decided, temporarily at the very least, to go and see the answers he needs.
The quest for an answer may be lonely at times, and may even be difficult, but the Hermit has his stick and the lantern to aid him and more importantly he has himself. It is all that he needs right now. When the answer has been attained, he can return, but until then he must go forward. The notion of only relying on himself is also quite empowering because nothing else can really affect him; he has total power to decide where he goes and what he does. He is the only one who can affect his situation.
