Fool Tarot Card Meanings

The first emotion the Fool card evokes in me is one of being carefree.  The sun is shining brightly and there is a positive feeling to the image.  The young man, who is the main focus of the card, looks well-dressed but has a knapsack over his shoulder, suggesting that he’s out on some great adventure rather than homeless.  He is looking up which tells me he is hopeful and is holding a flower delicately in his hand, as though he is taking in and savouring everything around him.  There is a dog at his feet that at first seems to be playfully bounding along with the man.  But then I see that the young man is at the edge of a cliff.  In his rapture he is very close to the edge and if he is not careful he may fall over.  Could the dog be warning him to be careful?

The story this card tells me is of starting out on a journey of discovery.  At the start of the journey there is youthful exuberance and excitement at what will be discovered.  I also see hope and a trust in the future.  The young man depicted on the card has no worries whatsoever; he is completely and totally open to his surroundings.  There is a positive sense of something beginning, of hope in what will come and having complete trust in the future.

There is also an implied warning in this card too.  The young man gives off an air of spontaneity; he is just going where his feet take him.  Is he being too trusting?  After all, he does not seem to even notice the cliff edge right before him.  He could do with being a little more cautious and taking heed of the little dog at his feet who may be warning him of the danger ahead.  If I could speak to the man, I would tell him to look before he leaps; to have hope and faith is great, but a measure of caution should also be exercised.

A new beginning.  Stepping out with confidence and hope on a new adventure.  Trusting in someone or something with the innocence and wonder of a child.  While you feel the optimism of the Fool, just remember to look where you’re stepping as you set out on this new adventure.  It is good to be open and trusting, but make sure this is well placed.
